Present stress from past events

Thinking about  stressful events from the past switches on the production of cortisol which is associated with stress. So we really need to be careful about getting lost in unhelpful memories, especially those we can do nothing about anymore. Here, the key is to step out of  rumination and into the present - in other words awareness of breathing, physical movements, whatever you are actually doing.
